The Interior

The central feature on the ground floor, with its 1700 square feet of living area, is the large living and dining area on the southwest side of the home.  Large windows and a vaulted ceiling with a dormer to let in extra light, make this a bright and sunny living space. Stone facing on the east wall of the living room makes for a striking feature wall that also acts as thermal mass for this passive solar design.  A peninsula counter separates the dining room from the spacious kitchen that features a large island and walk in pantry.  The main floor also includes a large master bedroom, with ensuite and walk in closet, and two additional bedrooms.

The upper floor loft office overlooks the living / dining area and provides a striking view out of both the south dormer in the vaulted ceiling over the living room and the north dormer that offers a cozy nook in the office.  A large family room, above the main floor bedrooms, includes a half bath and north and south facing dormers that add interesting nooks to the room.  French doors separate the family room from the loft office.

The walkout basement was specially designed to accommodate the original owners’ hobby – ballroom dancing.  They wanted a 30′ x 30′ dance floor with no obstructing posts, so this basement is designed with a large clear span room with hardwood floors and large south windows that provide plenty of passive solar heating.

Active Solar Components and Heating System

The heating system used for this home when it was built for the original owners is the ultimate in comfort – a solar / geothermal combination system that supplies radiant floor heating throughout the home and garage.  The geothermal system also provides air conditioning but, due to the effective overhangs provided by the passive solar design,  the owners have seldom needed to use this.  Only on very hot days, when they have lots of company constantly going in and out of the house, do they finally need to turn on the air conditioning in the afternoon.

A grid-tied solar photovoltaic system provides free electricity and helps offset the extra power usage of the geothermal system.  Three solar thermal collectors provide domestic hot water and assist with the in floor heating.  Excess heat from the collectors in the summer is transferred to the ground loops of the geothermal system.

Green Elements

This plan features passive solar and energy efficient design that provides free solar heating in the cold season and protects from overheating in the summer.  Green design elements include:

  • Appropriate window ratios for south, east, west and north walls for natural light and heat in the winter months
  • Suitably sized overhangs, balconies or awnings on the south, east and west sides to keep the house cool in the summer
  • Design allows for many insulation and radiant barrier options
  • Adequate roof space for active solar components
  • With appropriate construction methods, this design has the potential to qualify for various energy efficient standards such as Energy Star.
