Plan Description

Bedrooms:  1 + 1
Bathrooms: 1
Total Square Footage:  1280
Finished Square Footage:  1280
Garage:  none

The 1280 square foot home features a large vaulted living and dining with panoramic views to the south. This also acts as a solar collector for the passive solar design.  A pellet or wood stove offers warmth and atmosphere on cool winter evenings.  A stone mass wall behind the stove stores excess solar heat.  The convenient L-shaped kitchen has a large island overlooking the living room area and the views to the south and west.

The large master bedroom in the northwest corner will capture the evening sun.  An adjacent office comes equipped with a closet so it can double as a spare bedroom for guests.  The mechanical room is large enough to accommodate the battery bank and inverter for the off-grid solar power system.

The plan has no basement – it is designed to be built on an unheated Legalett Geo-Slab (for information on this system see  The simple construction for this engineered slab helps to make this a very affordable home plan.

This plan features passive solar and energy efficient design that provides free solar heating in the cold season and protects from overheating in the summer.  Green design elements include:

  • Appropriate window ratios for south, east, west and north walls for natural light and heat in the winter months
  • Suitably sized overhangs, balconies or awnings on the south, east and west sides to keep the house cool in the summer
  • Design allows for many insulation and radiant barrier options
  • Plenty of roof space for active solar components such as photovoltaic or solar thermal.
  • With appropriate construction methods, this design has the potential to qualify for various energy efficient standards such as Energy Star.
